Kathy’s Trip Report – Guest Blog

Friday, June 20th, 2014

As most you know our stateside team at St. Barth Properties visits St. Barth at least twice a year to do their villa and hotel inspections and re-inspections as well as to keep up with the latest dining options and happening on the island so as to better assist you with your trip planning to paradise. Kathy Schlitzer one of our very capable St. Barth Specialists and Julia Hurd our US office Concierge came down here last month. I was happy to see them both and we enjoyed some great dinners together.

Julia, our US concierge and I started our working trip to St Barth on May 10 traveling from Boston to St Maarten on Jet Blue. We were met in St Maarten by Easyway VIP, walked through immigration, helped with luggage, and brought to the taxi Easyway had arranged to transfer us to the ferry dock. Love the ease of Easyway!! You never know how the seas will be when you take the ferry from St Maarten to St Barth. Fortunately, having grown up with boats I was pretty sure I could weather the bumpy ride – but not so some of my fellow travelers on the Voyager. I’ve taken the ferry previously but this time the seas were higher and the rolling more pronounced. Staying glued to your seat is recommended, some say being on the outside seats is better than inside, but I think it depends on the person.

When we arrived at the ferry dock in St Barth Viviane from Gumbs Car Rental was there, as always, with the keys to our cars and off we went to the Hotel Taïwana, our home for two nights.

At the Hotel Taïwana Julia and I stayed in the Two bedroom Jade Suite with private pool. The views over Flamands Beach with its deep Caribbean blue water and white sand were inspiring. The hotel has done an amazing job renovating the suites and rooms, the décor is clean, the quality pure luxury. We enjoyed breakfast overlooking the beach, cocktails from our beach chairs, valet parking, free WIFI, immaculate housekeeping, and lets face it there is nothing like a fluffy bath robe and quality bath products. The staff was attentive and friendly. The two nights went by too quickly.

Monday morning we started our work week in earnest. Up early for breakfast and checkout, we each went our separate ways for the day. Unfortunately the weather was unusually rainy and overcast due to a front going through the area, but the sun peaked out enough and the rainy spells were short. A good day for reading on the beach as long as you have some shelter available for the periodic passing showers. Julia and I met at the end of the day at villa Méli Mélo our home for the remainder of our stay. Méli Mélo is located at the top of St. Jean with killer views from the front and back. The pool side overlooks Baie St Jean, the airport, and distant islands, the other side overlooks Saline. The Saline side is mostly protected land and we were visited by a goat family in our back yard several times. This villa has one of the best views on an island of spectacular view. Lucky us!

The days are busy going from villa to villa doing inspections and taking inventory, but the evening are for wonderful restaurants. Here’s Julia at Santa Fe in Lurin, she usually gets the Oyster entrée and the Dover Sole, and she has been known to love the Profiteroles for dessert. We also enjoyed the new restaurant Me Gusta on the harbor in Gustavia specializing in tapas influenced by Portugese flavors. Another new restaurant is Ocean. As the name implies they specialize in fresh fish, beautifully served.

Wednesday night Julia and I headed to our St Barth Properties weekly (in season) cocktail party at La Plage. It’s always a pleasure meeting clients and putting a face to the voice on the phone! Our island concierge, Magda, was celebrating a birthday so Julia and I took her to dinner at La Plage after the party. Magda’s young daughter Valérie joined us but was soon fast asleep on one of the banquettes. The location of La Plage is amazing, but having great food, good service AND be right on one of St Barth’s best beaches is outstanding!

I saw many villas during the week, some I was seeing again and some (newly acquired) I was seeing for the first time. I was especially pleased to see Villa O My, a great house for couples or family, and Artifact in Corossol is new, and luxurious with a view overlooking Corossol, the fishing boats, and turquoise water. Of course I always like seeing old favorites like Royal Palm, Nirvana, Blue Diamond and Au Soleil.

Our last night was at Bagatelle, another great meal ending with my favorite Molten Chocolate cake.

As usual I didn’t see everything I wanted to see, but it will be there when I get back. I look forward to returning in November.

À bientôt St Barth.

Some Morsels of St. Barth news

Friday, February 7th, 2014

Bonjour from sunny St. Barth!

The “Season” is in full swing and I wish you were here. As you may know we host a cocktail party for our guests each Wednesday evening at Tom Beach hotel’s La Plage restaurant on St Jean Beach. This past Wednesday, the place was packed with lots of happy clients who are enjoying their getaway and are extra grateful to be here and missing the horrible weather at home.

In fact, I met one couple who had just arrived a few hours earlier because they had been creative and proactive with their flights when their original flight was canceled due to the storm in the Northeast. The couple who is staying with them at Villa Manonjul was not as fortunate and arrived a day later. Fortunately they purchased the accommodation insurance that we offer, so they will be reimbursed for the missed nights. If you are delayed by weather check with us to see if your villa is available after your original scheduled departure date because we may be able to adjust your dates so that you do not miss any of your days in paradise.

What’s happening ?

For those of you who have never been here, we have a famous bar in the heart of Gustavia. Le Select was founded by Marius Stakelborough in 1949. This is THE place to go for drinks, meet friends, make new friends and have a Cheeseburger in Paradise while you are at it. I was fortunate to have been able to attend both Le Select’s 50th anniversary and 60th anniversary parties. Marius’ good friend Jimmy Buffett entertained us with a free concert on each occasion. Marius turned 90 last year. You would never know it. Most days he walks to Le Select to have a Ti Punch for which the bar is famous. It keeps him young, try it! One day in early December, I had been filming with a German TV crew and after we finished we met Marius there. He proceeded to jump behind the bar to concoct one of his Ti Punches for each of us. He has not lost his touch.

Shortly after that day Marius was missing from the scene. His brother Vianny cuts my husband Steve’s hair told him that Marius was in the hospital in Guadeloupe. He had problems with one of his eyes in the past. This time he had a detached retina in his good eye and spent the better part of 3 weeks recovering in Guadeloupe before being able to come back to St. Barth. To add insult to injury, he had fallen and hurt his back. He was confined to his house. He had plenty of visitors but it was very important that he get out of the house and keep his vitality. To me, the only way to do that would be to get him back to Le Select. So, that is what his friends and family decided to do. It was the best thing that could happen to him and to us. I stopped by to say Bonjour and he thanked me for putting his picture in the 25th Anniversary of St. Barth Properties edition of our Live Your Dream catalogue. (If you would like us to mail you one, please send a note with your mailing address to info@stbarth.com.) Welcome back, Marius!

What else?

You have witnessed it or are even guilty of doing it. What? Snapping pictures of the planes taking off and landing to and from our infamous little landing strip. I can’t tell you how many times I see people foolishly standing at the end of the runway with their cameras at-the ready to capture the scene. Many have to dive onto the sand to avoid being hit by a low flying plane.

Airport police often shoo people away.
Warning signs posted but they do not obey.
My photographer friend Ed shows all of you
Standing above the runway is hazardous too.

Ed was extremely lucky to survive with minor injuries. One more inch and no more pictures from the very talented Ed Gudenas. His coffee table book is full of gorgeous St. Barth photos so I am very happy to have him around to take more. Please be careful. I want all of you to be around for a long time too.

November in St. Barth – Trip Report by Connie Walsh

Thursday, December 12th, 2013

I am happily back on St. Barth and am based here for at least the next 5 months (poor me). Last month I was also here doing some villa inspections, spending time with friends and hosting our 25th Anniversary party celebrating the silver anniversary of when I founded St. Barth Properties. My colleague Connie Walsh was with me and I am pleased to share her trip report with you as a Guest Blog.

Connie Walsh’s Trip Report November 2013

Connie Walsh

Connie Walsh

One of the things I love best about the island of St. Barth is the charming small-town ordinary-ness of its daily life. It both belies and yet compliments the TMZ-like Jay Z & Beyoncé-ness which reaches its star-studded zenith over the Christmas and New Year holidays. But even then, residents, which include many whose families have called St. Barth home for generations, are out and about, stopping in at the post office, buying a baguette or grabbing a burger in Gustavia’s Le Select. And if they meet Mariah Carey popping out of a shop, Dave Letterman jogging the hills or are seated next to Hollywood’s latest starlet in a restaurant, it’s all in a St. Barth day.

Come August and September, many of the hotels and some restaurants shutter for an annual closing period. It’s a quiet time and one that many vacationers love, for just that reason. Come October, everything begins re-opening up with great energy. Hotels sport a range of renovations, announce new chefs and menus and everyone, residents and visitors alike are excited to see what new bistros and boutiques the season will bring.

I’ve been traveling to St.Barth in November for a number of years now with the St. Barth Properties (SBP) team for the pre-season inspection trip. I find the enthusiasm as tangible as the whiff of the scent of fresh paint. This year I added in some vacation time. Joining SBP’s president, my client and friend Peg Walsh. Together with our husbands and other friends, we shared the delightful Villa Nirvana. It was perfect for 3 couples, like many villas in the portfolio, its en suite bedrooms are privately situated and the poolside outdoor living spaces are designed to gather and socialize and take in a spectacular view. And we did.

My husband and I loved the Lurin location in part due to its proximity to Gouverneur Beach, one of our favorites. We could jump in the car and head down for a morning swim and be back in no time for a 2nd helping of French pastries. (Our St. Barth guilty pleasure.) The week went by all too quickly, a shopping trip combined with burgers, ice cold Caribs, and people-watching at the legendary Le Select; picnic lunches and swimming at St. Jean Beach where, end of day, we’d stroll down to La Plage’s Pink Parrot bar for a late-afternoon glass of rosé and a lovely day at the Christopher. The Pt. Milou hotel offers Day Passes and 80 euros per person will reserve you a plush poolside sunbed, umbrella and towel. The seafront pool here is the island’s largest and just gorgeous. A welcome cocktail and lunch at the feet-in-the-sand Mango is included. Spa aficionados can upgrade the Pass to include treatments at the hotel’s Spa Sisley. Check-in the with SBP’s concierge team to reserve the Pass.

And now on to the restaurant round-up. Our tradition is to have our first night on-the-island dinner at Andy’s Hideaway. The beloved old shanty with a view of the parking lots has been spiffed up. Brightly painted, plus new chairs and tables give it a contemporary look. Dare we say très chic? The thin crust pizza is still fabulous and the vanilla rhum, yummy. Andy belted out Sweet Caroline as he is wont to do and the crowd joined in. In short, it’s as much fun as ever.

Santa Fe has long been on my must-dine list (I always finish with the old-school Peach Melba.) and I’ve now added Le Carre Lounge. I love the way owner Franck Mathevet describes the preparations of each dish, with fingers aflutter like he is actually feeling the ingredients and I love everything on the menu starting with the truffle oil popcorn. Recommendations: the Gnocchi Maison “al pesto” and the crispy chicken rolls with ginger and lime.

Le Carre Lounge

We dined at Hotel Le Toiny‘s Relais Chateau restaurant Le Gaïac where on Tuesday nights they offer their popular 3 course pre-fixe Fish Market. The Mahi-Mahi was delish and I was blown away by my dessert of chocolate ganache served with a crispy biscuit, banana foam and avocado sorbet. (No, really.)

The Mahi-Mahi at Le Toiny's Le Gaïac

The Mahi-Mahi at Le Toiny’s Le Gaïac

We lunched at the Sereno and the Guanahani hotels. Le Sereno is boasting a new concept and menu and we devoured a starter of eggplant chips with tzatziki sauce and a salad of assorted melon tossed with arugula and dressed with a balsamic reduction – cool and refreshing. My favorite starter of this trip was the Guanahani’s Indigo resto’s Wahoo ceviche sprinkled with coconut.

This year, SBP upgraded their annual Beachside Bash in honor of their Silver Anniversary and everyone gathered at the Hotel Taïwana’s newly-christened restaurant Casa Flamands for an elegant buffet supper. With that as a “taste” we are looking forward to more.

My favorite of the new eateries is Gustavia’s just-opened Thai restaurant Black Ginger. The décor of the bi-level edifice is dramatic with a bold red and black color scheme. Head up to the 2nd floor and dine under the stars. Dishes are authentically prepared and we love that they incorporate the local fish. The black pepper Mahi-Mahi was a huge hit with our crowd and I loved my chicken curry in coconut milk. Newly opened on the harbor, Les Coulisses is casual, fun and a great stop for lighter fare. They serve tapas and very good pizza.

Black Ginger

Our last day on St. Barth was a busy one and we planned to fit in lunch at a little restaurant that we heard was a favorite of locals, Le Jardin. Housed in a garden pavilion and tucked away in the shopping plaza across from the airport, it was simple, bright, airy and absolutely charming. I was delighted to see gazpacho on the menu and it was perfectly chilled and seasoned. However, I did have my eye on the two-fisted juicy burgers that were served up to the guys at the table beside us. Next time. We slowed down, ordered a glass of rosé and “hung out with the locals”. Put it on your list. It’s open for breakfast if you fly in early and it works well for a pre-departure cocktail. And who knows the crowd that day might include a celeb like Mick Jagger or a “special” local like Jimmy Buffett. But in St. Barth. everyone feels, well, special. Enjoy!

Our November trips to St Barth are always exciting. The island is coming alive for the season, and there are new shops, restaurants, villas, and newly refurbished hotels to experience. Not to mention the annual St Barth Properties November BASH, held this year on November 10, and our Beaujolais Nouveau party on November 14. A great week to be in St Barth!

For this trip I decided to try the new Tradewind Aviation flight from St Thomas to St Barth. I flew direct from Boston to St Thomas on JetBlue then easily made the connection on Tradewind to St Barth. It worked perfectly and because the St Thomas airport is so small I breezed through the airport with time for a stop in the bar for a snack. Tradewind flies directly to St Barth from San Juan, Antigua, and St Thomas.

On arrival in St Barth my Gumbs car was waiting and I headed to my first accommodation, two nights at the Hotel Christopher. After settling in a was off to La Plage at the Tom Beach Hotel to join my colleagues for great food, music, and entertainment (pole dancing and fire juggling!) Always a nice way to spend a first night in St Barth.

The Christopher hotel’s new manager Sebastien Maingourd was pleased to show me further room refurbishment that had taken place since my last visit. My Ocean Terrace room was very comfortable and I slept well. At breakfast the next morning I watched an aqua biking class in the pool, had I not had appointments I would have joined in, it looked like fun. The manager joined me for coffee and I learned that the restaurant is featuring a new chef from Brazil who promises to shake up the menu with a Brazilian twist. Later I toured the new Sisley brand spa and the gym, no time for a treatment or workout today. C’est dommage. All in all I was pleased with the Christopher and look forward to recommending it to clients for the coming season. HINT: If you’re looking for a great place to have a cocktail and watch the sunset, the Christopher is the place to go. Stay for dinner at their restaurant Taïno then go up to Le Ti St Barth for the cabaret!

I spent the rest of the day looking at villas, notably Lys Blanc in Lurin. All I can say is what a view! This villa is newly renovated, comfortable, and very convenient to Gustavia, St Jean, and both Gouverneur and Saline beaches. The layout is good for kids too.

Villa Blue Diamond is under construction but even looking over an empty pool I was blown away by the view. Blue Diamond will be ready in mid January and will be spectacular. We have preliminary pictures on the website with more to come.

Villa Lilu is a two bedroom in Petite Saline. The view is beautiful with lush greenery and ocean views in a wide arc. The owner has designed the house for comfort and style. She mixed old and new successfully and result is brilliant.

Casa del Mar is a villa we represented in the past but a new owner has shaken it up – a lot! Massive work indoors and out has resulted in a truly spectacular result. While I was there the workers were everywhere, as well as piles of material and tons of shrubbery waiting to be planted. The owner showed me multiple new outdoor spaces for drinks and dining, as well as large Jacuzzi overlooking spectacular views. We’ll have pictures of the end product soon. Watch for them.

Villa Casa del Mar

I don’t have space to mention all the villas I saw but special mention must be made of my other accommodations.

Two nights in Villa Nirvana was a treat. I’ve stayed at this villa in the past and I’ve never been disappointed. Clean and comfortable with an amazing sunset view, the owner has added everything to make her guests feel like home away from home. Two nights wasn’t enough.

Villa Nirvana

Two nights in a Garden Bungalow at the Hotel Isle de France was a treat. After a great sleep I was treated to a massage at the spa by one of their highly trained therapists and it made for a wonderful start to my day. Later I had drinks by the beach and watched the weekly fashion show. Even if you aren’t staying at the Isle de France, don’t miss eating at their restaurant La Case de l’Isle right on Flamands Beach – dinner, or a long lunch on the beach, I opted for both!

My last night was spent in one of the newly renovated suites at the Hotel Carl Gustaf. Over the summer everything was refreshed and renewed with new furniture, linens and accessories to complete the transformation. By that time I needed a good sleep to get ready for a day of travel and that’s just what I got. A lovely breakfast overlooking the harbor and I was off the airport after another successful working (wink, wink) trip to paradise.

Emily Elbert, Eitch, Josh Logan, Ryan Fardy as well as Peter Barbee, a 24 year old Nashville based artist and the very talented DJ Alex Merrell will all be performing for us.

You will be able to enjoy the music at La Plage, The Christopher, Le Sereno, Bonito restaurant, Taïwana Hotel, L’Esprit, the restaurant of Jean-Claude Dufour, Hotel St Barth Isle de France, Hotel Le Village de St Jean, La Cantina, Voyageur Lounge, the Hotel Carl Gustaf, Eddy’s Restaurant and La Route des Boucaniers.

St. Barth Properties team and the owner of Villa Enfin are proud and pleased to have been able to donate a villa stay for some of the musicians. They are thrilled to be able to stay at this wonderful villa where they can enjoy a little R&R; they can take a dip in the pool and enjoy the panoramic views and be revitalized to entertain us each evening.

Quick Trip to St. Barth Part 3: Summer Sessions and other tidbits on St Barth

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

On Sunday I went to visit a brand new 2 bedroom villa that is located in St. Jean. It is 90% finished but some of the accessories like the lamps will not arrive at the decorator’s boutique until November. The pictures that we have up on our website now are just to give you an idea of the view and some of the furnishings. Villa Coco de Mer is a luxurious 2 bedroom 3 bathroom villa located on the top of St. Jean. It boasts incredible views of the entire Baie de St. Jean, the whole airport runway and the sea behind it. The owners have spared no expense.

The living room and gourmet kitchen as well as a full guest bath are adjacent to the front deck that has outdoor living and dining spaces and guests can enjoy that great view. The rear deck is very private, has a waterfall, sitting and sunning areas, two en suite king bedrooms and a fabulous warm Jacuzzi. There is a private gate that leads to the huge community pool at Les Terrasses where Coco De Mer’s guests can swim laps and then return to their private deck. I think you will love it!

Sunday night we went to the Hotel Christopher’s Taïno restaurant to enjoy the food and the ambience as well as Tais, the Brazilian singer. She and her band played by the hotel’s gorgeous swimming pool and we really loved her music.

Monday was another holiday in St. Barth, so almost all businesses and offices were closed. The restaurants were open so I took the opportunity to meet with the above mentioned Xavier Pignet a co-owner of Dõ Brazil to discuss the menu at our November 10, 2011 Beachside Bash. I hope that you have booked your accommodation with us by now because the party promises to be lots of fun. For those of you who have never been to Dð Brazil which is located on Shell Beach, the restaurant has two levels. The beach level serves late breakfast and lunch and has a bar. The upstairs level serves lunch and dinner and also has a bar. And…believe it or not there will be a full moon that night so you can enjoy the moon beams reflecting off of the water—how romantic.

Our SBP Beachside Bash is a private party just for you and we have taken over both levels. We’ll start with Une Coupe de Champagne to welcome you followed by an apéritif… (Mojitos anyone?) and some hors d’oeuvres. Then on to the main courses that will include the Catch of the Day, ribs, a special chicken dish and lots of sides. We’ll provide beer and wine too. Soley will be entertaining you as will Christine Gordon and we’ll have a mix of DJ music for your dancing pleasure. If you have already reserved your accommodation, send an email to Julia, concierge@stbarth.com, to RSVP. If you still need to book your villa or hotel, please contact reservations@stbarth.com.

St. Barth Summer Sessions last night took place at Tom Beach Hotel’s restaurant, La Plage that evening. We went there for dinner and the place was packed. The grande finale, BIG JAM featured Project K-Paz, Tom Howie Band, Adam Lasher Band Tais plus DJ’s Alex Merrill and Jimmy Valance. We were treated to a fashion show as well. I’ll tell you about my delicious meal in another blog.

Why go to St. Barth in August? St Barth Rocks Presents St. Barth Summer Sessions August 05-15, 2011

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

The Dog Days of Summer in the United States can be defined as a time period or event that is very hot and/or stagnant. Why not pack your carry-on, jump in a plane and head to St. Barth to attend an event in Barth that is not to be missed? It’s the St. Barth Summer Sessions that is promoted by St. Barth Rocks.

St Barth Rocks is a non-profit organization whose goal is to bring artists and musicians to perform in Saint Barthélemy all year long. This year it is promoting St. Barth Summer Sessions which is an annual event that brings in very talented artists to perform each evening between August 05 and 15. Both were created by hotelier Thierry de Badereau of Hotel Tom Beach and his famous restaurant La Plage. It has grown into an extremely popular event that will take place at a variety of different venues all over the island and include a concert featuring all of the invited artists that will take place on the harbor’s quai on August 13th.

This year’s festival focuses on artists from Brazil. Performers such as TAIS ALVARENGA the Brazilian 23-year-old songwriter, composer, actress and singer who graduated from Bostons’ Berklee College of Music with a degree in film scoring will surely dazzle us all. ALVARO KAPAZ who was born in São Paulo, Brazil was awarded the Berklee Achievement Scholarship for his outstanding involvement with the college, He is also one of the creators of the band, Project K-Paz that will be entertaining you. The ABERTO PRA BALANCO TRIO formed by young São Paulo musicians that has rocked at parties, events and concerts in São Paulo and other parts of Brazil will be sure to rock you too.

Artists from elsewhere such as the ASHLEY RODRIGUEZ TRIO one of the famous finalists and singers from American Idol 2010 who graduated from Berklee in 2009 will bring her ‘All Girls Band’ to the Summer Sessions. Tom Howie is a 22 year-old guitarist and songwriter whose soaring vocals and songwriting talents have drawn comparison to Jeff Buckley and Thom Yorke. In November, he will release his third solo album, The Right and Wrong of Everything. RYAN FARDY has created his own genre, mixing Blues, Rock, Funk, R&B, Soul and Pop. At 24 years old, Ryan has had a fantastic start to his 10-year career. He has opened for the legendary Chaka Khan, Leon Russell, Edgar Winter, Mountain, Snoop Dogg, Rick Derringer, Hoobastank, and more.

Let’s not forget the DJ’s! YO–ONE SUTTER is resident DJ at restaurant La Plage, his music is a mix of electro acoustic, Soul, Swing, Jazz and Latin Beat and he’s doing a fusion between Live Music and a DJ set. JOSE PADILLA /DJ CAFÉ DEL MAR, IBIZA first arrived on Ibiza in 1975 and has been DJing there ever since. With the ‘Café del Mar’ series he is the so-called “spiritual father of Chill-Out”. He has gone from a poor barrio in Northern Spain, to a jet-set DJ lifestyle; guesting in London, Paris, Monte-Carlo, Amsterdam, Miami, Italy, Moscow and Australia. Who else will be there? Steve and I had the pleasure of dining with Thierry the creator of Summer Sessions, Tom Beach Hotel’s Assistant GM Aymeric Bourdin and DJ ALEX MERRELL who will be spinning for you. Alex’s style is distinct yet tailored to the audience, influenced by house, electro, dance, hip hop, classic and indie rock, top 40, lounge and world music.

The events will take place at Taïno restaurant at the Hotel Christopher in Pointe Milou, Le Bartoloméo restaurant at Hotel Guanahani & Spa on Grand Cul de Sac as well as at the restaurant La Plage at Hotel Tom Beach which is located on St. Jean Beach. In addition, performances will be held at Hotel La Banane which is surrounded by an exotic garden and is in Lorient as well as Bonito restaurant which boasts an extraordinary view over the Harbor of Gustavia (Where we host our cocktail party from the end of November through the end of April). Plus more great venues like La Gloriette, a beach restaurant located on the lagoon of Grand Cul de Sac, Le Tamarin located in a huge garden with its famous tamarind tree and parrots and is located on the way to Saline Beach are also hosting performances. As previously mentioned, a concert for the etire island will be held on the harbor side quai Saturday night August 13, 2011. For me it’s a must-do!

Don’t miss out on this great event! Contact reservations@stbarth.com or call 1-800-421-3396. Book an accommodation for 5 nights or more for any stay that includes any date between August 01 and 27, 2011 and St. Barth Properties will give each person in your party one 50 euro voucher to be used towards a fun evening at Le Ti St Barth while you are there. (The voucher is non-transferable and valid through August 27, 2011). This offer is applicable for new bookings made between June 28 and July 08, 2011 or until we run out of vouchers (80) whichever comes first. Where can I rent or buy beach chairs?

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Clients often ask us if there are any beach chairs at the villa where they will be staying. Some villas do have beach chairs for the clients’ use. However, the chairs do not last long and rust-out often due to the salt air.

Have no fear! A solution is near!

You can rent them! You can also buy them!

Sand chairs are available for rent (or for sale) at Casarina, a little boutique in St. Jean that is located across the street from the Pelican Shops and Nikki Beach. The price for the rental is 5 euros per day (3 day minimum). If you are staying longer than 10 days, then you might as well buy them as they are for sale for 50 euros. Casarina is open every day from 9:30am to 7:00 pm.

We have also been able to find them at the CCPF True Value Store in Public (pronounced the French way, “pooblique”). We also were able to purchase our cooler there. Both shops have umbrellas but you should keep an eye on them when those wonderful breezes become gusty.

The sand chairs are ideal for people who like to explore all of the beautiful beaches that we have on St. Barth. Go to the boulangerie, get your baguette, make or buy sandwiches, pack your cooler, your beach towels and your chairs and off you go. Want to try another beach in the afternoon? No problem, keep the chairs etc. in your car; it’s that easy.

If you prefer to stay put and decide not to pack a cooler for the day, you can pamper yourself by renting a lounge chair where you can have access to drinks and food with a little music thrown in for good measure. St. Jean Beach has two options:

Carib Waterplay not only rents windsurfing boards and gives windsurfing lessons, they have beach chaises (with pads) and umbrellas that you can rent for the day. The price is 10 euros a day for a chaise and 10 euros a day for an umbrella. Just sign up at their booth.

Baby, it’s cold outside (and snowy)? Cheri, it’s warm in St. Barth (and sunny)

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Have you had enough of winter? Why not do what my son, Mark Smyth and his wife Cynthia did last week? They hired a babysitter and escaped from the frigid cold of Massachusetts.

As many of you already know I am married to a dentist. My son, Mark is also a dentist and bought my husband’s dental practice a few years ago. The St. Barth Dental Association held their annual meeting at the Capitainerie January 17-21, 2011, so Steve and Mark took the course and learned a lot. (I will have more details on the 2012 meeting in a future blog for any of you dentists who may be interested.) The course finished at 11:30 am each day, so there was plenty of time left to play and Thursday evening the SBDA hosted a cocktail party followed by dinner and a fashion show at La Plage.

Mark and Cynthia arrived via Tradewind Aviation from San Juan. The first order of business was to clear immigration by showing their passports to a friendly gendarme. Then on to the luggage carousel to retrieve their bags and head out the door, turn right and walk to the car rental area and check in at our booth.

It was great to have them here. They haven’t been to St Barth since their last child was born in 1990, so they really noticed the changes and loved the fact that the island remains as charming as ever.

February is fast approaching and the groundhog will soon be reminding you that there are still 6 more weeks of winter ahead of you. Do you need an incentive to come down here with your honey?

Surprise your significant other for Valentine’s Day! Book Villa Bamboo for any stay in February and a Suzuki Jimny car rental will be included in the rate! That is a savings of 450 euros per week! Just think of how many romantic dinners you can have with that extra 450 euros in your pocket. Villa Bamboo is lovely and private. Guests love to listen to the sounds of the sea as they sit on the pool deck and marvel at view and the ever-changing colors of the crystal clear water on Grand Cul de Sac Bay. Another Beautiful Day in Paradise

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

It’s another beautiful day in paradise. Wish you were here!

Santa Claus managed to find us at La Plage on Christmas Day. He is so adaptable that he was able to arrive by boat instead of via his reindeer! The children (and adults) were delighted to see him and he passed out candy to them.

The houle has subsided and the yachts are back on the dock. Last night Macy Gray gave a free concert on the quai. Lots of people gathered there to see her perform. What a show!
