Day 6

The Birthday!!

Today Reegan turned sweet 16!

What does that mean? In St. Barth, it means she is old enough to operate a Jet Ski! Magda had arranged for the girls to take a Jet Ski tour around the island on Reegan’s birthday. We took them to Grand Cul de Sac where Ouanalao Dive has their Dive Center booth (by O’Corail restaurant). The company also rents Jet Skis. Reegan and Andrea signed the forms, were fitted with their life jackets and went down to the water to get on their jet skis. The instructor gave a demonstration on how they work, had them get familiar with the mechanics and off they went.

An hour and a half later they were back! I couldn’t believe that they could go all the way around St. Barth in that short a period of time. They must have been speed demons! Is there a speed limit in the Caribbean Sea?

That evening I gave Reegan her present and we headed out to celebrate her birthday at Nikki Beach. This very “in spot” with beds on the beach no less, had a cabaret of their own that was performing that evening so we chose to surprise Reegan and treat her to a special night as not only was it her birthday, it was also the girls’ last night in St. Barth.

We had a great table overlooking both the beach and the stage. The food was delicious. The show was fun and a bit risqué…very French but not at all offensive. The audience was able to join in at the end and everyone jumped on stage to dance.

Day 7

All good things must come to an end and the next morning we sadly brought Reegan and Andrea back to airport to begin their journey home to Massachusetts. I had booked them on Tradewind Aviation so that they could fly directly to San Juan where they were able to connect to their Jet Blue Flight back to Boston. Surprise, surprise they were able to fly in Tradewind’s ultra luxurious Pilatus both ways. What a treat!

Au Revoir

We had a great week and it was wonderful to watch Reegan blossom into an independent young lady in such a short period of time. She has already decided that she loves everything about the French, wants to return again and again (as we all do) and I am sure she will be speaking French fluently in the not too distant future. À bientôt, Reegan.

Day 5

After a late night out at Le Ti, the girls decided to sleep in. When they awakened they wanted to sit poolside and enjoy the amazing view from Villa Everest.

The view from Villa Everest

Sunset from Villa Everest and yes, we did see the Green Flash

The agenda for today was to shop, shop and then shop some more as the week was winding down. They wanted to buy a few things for themselves but mostly for their parents, friends and siblings back home.

So, off we went to Gustavia again. They window shopped and then checked out a bunch of boutiques before deciding to buy anything. After making some purchases in Gustavia, I opened a whole new world to them by taking them to the boutiques in St. Jean. The result? Success! Each shop had the just-so-perfect gift for each and every individual on their lists.

It was time to hurry back to the villa because it was Thursday and each Thursday from late November until the last Thursday in April, St. Barth Properties hosts a cocktail party for all of our clients who are on the island. It takes place from 6:30 to 7:30 at Bonito, the wonderful hillside restaurant that overlooks the beautiful harbor and the twinkling lights of St. Maarten in the distance. We had a great crowd that evening and enjoyed meeting everyone and hearing them rave about their accommodation, our services as well as the island itself. The guests mingled and made new friends.

Then, off to Dõ Brazil on Shell Beach for dinner. When we got there I was very surprised to learn that the waiter had given our reserved (by our concierge Magda) beach front table away! You see, a couple at the cocktail party had kept me past the normal 7:30 end time and we had dinner reservations at 7:45. We showed up at 8:00 and I was scolded for being 15 minutes late! (Never mind that there wasn’t any parking nearby due to another event in the area that also slowed us down). Who ever heard of a restaurant in St. Barth giving away a reserved table less than 15 minutes before the diners showed up? Mind you, I am not Elizabeth Taylor who always insisted on being “fashionably late” (even to her own funeral!) But giving people a little leeway is always nice. The good news is that it all worked out and we ended up with a great table. It was lovely for the four of us to be able to dine while overlooking the beach.

Day 4 finds us up bright and early because Reegan and Andrea were going out on the Ne Me Quitte Pas Catamaran at 9:00 am. They had signed up for a half-Day trip to Colombier and that beach is only accessible by a 20 minute hike along a goat path or by boat. Once owned by the Rockefeller Family, the beach has always been public and it remains untouched. There is great snorkeling just offshore.

Lathered up with sunscreen (They learned their lesson the hard way) a dingy took them out to the boat and off they went. The Catamaran had snorkeling equipment as well as kayaks which the girls used to paddle onto the beach.

Kayaking off of Colombier Beach

We picked them up at 1:00 and hurried off to our luncheon date with Christine and Felix from Le Bar du Village. We met them at O’Corail which is a fabulous little place on Grand Cul de Sac Beach. (Their goat cheese salad is to die for.) We opted for a table on the beach, took off our shoes and put our toes in the sand.

What’s a trip to St. Barth without going to Le Ti St. Barth for dinner and a show? I made sure the girls would not miss out on that experience so asked Magda to book a great table for us. Right now Le Ti has a fabulous cabaret show on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings; we were fortunate to see it on that Wednesday. It was so professionally done and the costumes were quite remarkable.

Day 3

The girls were up fairly early and decided that they wanted to go to a different beach; they wanted to go that morning. As I mentioned to you Reegan has such fair skin that she burns within minutes of being in the sun. Andrea on the other hand, told me that she never burns because she is Greek and her skin tans easily. First things first I said, “Let’s go to the pharmacy and get some sunscreen”. They like the spray kind and had decided upon Gouverneur Beach which is a gorgeous undeveloped beach. There is no shade, however. They made their lunches, packed the cooler and we dropped them off at 10:30. We picked them up at 1:30. They had really enjoyed swimming and sunning there.

What’s next? I had made plans to dine that evening with my long time (11 visits with SBP!) wonderful clients Mike and Bonnie long before I had surprised Reegan with this trip. Not a big deal as these teenage girls love to shop and wanted to wander around Gustavia and get their bearings before doing some serious shopping later in the week. They also wanted to go to the famous Le Select for a Cheeseburger in Paradise. We made plans, dropped them off in Gustavia and then picked them up at about 7:00. They were glad to spend the evening alone at the villa. (Yes, they were sunburned, too.) They had their laptops and were happily posting their activities on Facebook!

Le Select

In the meantime, Steve and I took Bonnie and Mike to dinner at Taïno restaurant at the Christopher. It was as if we had been friends for life! We had such a good time and they have already booked Villa Le Perchoir for their 12th visit (in 2012 no less).

Day 1 and 2

I surprised my beautiful granddaughter Reegan with a trip to St. Barth as her present for her Sweet Sixteenth Birthday. I booked the trip for Reegan and her friend Andrea at midnight on Friday. They flew on JetBlue from Boston to San Juan and then on Tradewind Aviation from San Juan to St. Barth and arrived at 4:00 pm on Sunday. We picked them up and took them to our villa. Tired but very excited, they were fine with our plans for their first evening. They quickly unpacked, changed and we were off to see the sunset at Victoria’s Lounge at the hotel Carl Gustaf.

Arrival Day on the Tarmac

Then we headed over to Andy’s Hideaway which is the perfect place for weary travelers who wish to dine in a fun inexpensive atmosphere. The wait staff is excellent and ever so friendly and Andy always is a hoot! We love to order the Pierrade which is a hot stone on which you cook your food. They have a combo platter with beef, duck and chicken and they have a fish platter with shrimp, scallops and Tuna. All of this comes with salad and potato or fries and it is only 22 euros per person.

The next day, the girls were up early and ready to explore St. Barth. Reegan is very fair and burns like crazy, so we decided that we would go to the beach later in the day. I had an appointment at the office and I brought them with me so that they could plan their week with our St. Barth Concierge, Magda Votava. They chose some fun activities and Magda made the reservations for them. She also made all of our dinner and lunch reservations. In the meantime, my husband made sandwiches and packed the cooler for the beach.

We arrived at St. Jean Beach around 2:15. Reegan and Andrea had signed up to take a windsurfing lesson with Jean Michel at Carib Water Play at 3:00. What fun! Jean Michel started them out on the beach so that they could get the hang of it; then it was time to actually get in the water and wind surf. They did quite well and enjoyed it. We stayed on the beach until about 5:30 and headed back to the villa to shower and get ready for dinner.

We chose to dine at the Santa Fé which is one of our favorite places. There was a full moon that evening and we enjoyed being able to dine on their delicious fare while looking at the twinkling lights emanating from St. Kitts, Statia and Saba in the distance.
