It is with great sadness that I announce the official closing of the beautiful 5 Star hotel Carl Gustaf as of August 31, 2013. It was one of my favorites. Built in 1991 by successful businessman Jacques Laurent, its perch over the harbor was the ideal spot to be for sunset cocktails, a romantic dinner or a weeklong stay in one of its magnificent villa suites.
Like the rest of us, Jacques fell in love with St. Barth…for him it was in 1983, for me it was in 1986. At that time he owned PRB, the third largest paint coating manufacturer in France which he had founded at the age of 36. His love for the island meant he wanted to be a part of it. His dream was to build the Carl Gustaf and so he did. His daughter Emmanuelle became the hotel’s manager and I really enjoyed working with her. Our clients all loved the hotel; I was fortunate enough to have been a guest there on a few occasions. Jacques has since passed away and time moves on. We do hope to see the doors of the Carl Gustaf reopen in the near future.
In the meantime, do visit The Hotels of St. Barth a special collection of the island’s most distinctive hotels. The website features a wealth of information. Are you looking for a relaxing retreat or a romantic getaway? Fine dining and a wealth of services and amenities? Each hotel is exceptional in its own way and all share the ambiance of casual sophistication that is St. Barth.

So sad to hear that Carl Gustav is closing We spent many
An evening enjoying magnificent sunsets
While having one of Jackie’s piña colada
or his excellent martini. I hope someone
Is able to buy Carl Gustav and keep it going
What a loss for St Barths
Hi Jeanne,
We too will really miss going to Victoria’s Lounge for sunset cocktails and seeing bartender Jackie. He was famous for the Planteur’s Punch he concocted too and also a great guy. Perhaps a buyer will reach out to us at St. Barth Properties Sotheby’s International Realty and the hotel will be able to reopen soon. It is truly a remarkable property in an extraordinary location.
Sunny regards,
Peg
It’s sad but it seemed to run its course. I remember the property from years ago and it definitely lost its sparkle. Difficult to say why. However, as in many things in life, sometimes things must end before they can be re-born. It will be re-invented and come back eventually; perhaps as something very different, but I’m sure very good.
I am hoping for the same thing. The Carl Gustaf has so much potential; The view is glorious and the it is so perfectly located that I think it will attract new ownersship in the near future.
SAD!!! We spent our tenth wedding anniversary at the Carl Gustaf and spent another vacation in the villas shortly after. BEAUTIFUL location and rooms. I was hoping to stay there again this year. For years the room reservations on line were sold out. I do not understand. Please reopen!
