The Real Housewives of New York City (RHONY) In St. Barts Part Two

Tuesday, September 4th, 2012

Did you catch the Real Housewives of New York City (RHONY) in St Barts second episode (#14) on Bravo at 9:00 p.m last night? A repeat of Episode 13 aired right before it.

Well, those Housewives sure do like to bicker! (Can’t they just enjoy their time on beautiful St. Barth the way the rest of us do?) And Aviva!! Good grief – the flight from St. Maarten to St. Barts is not the way she made it seem. And by the way, Aviva why didn’t you just take the ferry?

If you saw last week’s episode I was on the show greeting the RHONY (sans Aviva) at the magnificent Villa Oasis de Salines.

Isn’t it gorgeous? It is pricey at $100,000 per week in high season (January 7 to April 15) but worth it. In Value Season (April 16-December 15) it is $70,000 and if 6 couples split the cost, it makes it more reasonable. If you want to rent if during the Christmas-New Year’s period, prepare to bite the bullet as there is a 2 week minimum and it’s $140,000 per week. (It is already booked for Christmas 2012 but we have other fabulous villas that are still open.) Contact: reservations@stbarth.com.

Back to last night…

I was at my St. Barth Properties Sotheby’s International Realty on-island office when Sonja and Ramona walked in. They were upset with the other Real Housewives because the “girl’s weekend” had become a dating event with boyfriends and husbands involved so they asked me for a “back-up” villa for them just in case they wanted to move there that very night! I was surprised but I checked availability and fortunately the fabulous Villa Au Soleil was available and I knew they would love it. It is so private and the view is incredible. (I also mentioned to them that Steve Martin owns it which of course impressed them). I enjoyed talking to them.

One more thing, did you see the RHONY walking into Bagatelle restaurant? We were there by coincidence with a bunch of dentists who were taking a continuing education course with the SBDA (St. Barth Dental Association) and having dinner. If you freeze the episode at :56 you can see my dentist son, Mark Smyth at the end of our table – small world.

I hope you are enjoying the scenery and those amazing shots of Villa Oasis de Salines.

RHONY Does St. Barts! Does the Acronym RHONY mean anything to you?

Wednesday, August 15th, 2012

Do you know what RHONY means? If you don’t, I was in the same boat. I have since been enlightened. It’s an acronym for the Real Housewives Of New York! There’s a show on Bravo TV called The Real Housewives of New York City. Fans refer to it as RHONY.

A December 15, 2011 telephone phone call to my St. Barth Properties US office and St. Barth Specialist Julie Nally requesting a fabulous 6 bedroom villa for The Real Housewives of New York City prompted me to do some quick research because they were planning on going to St Barts in only 5 short weeks.

A whole new world (aka Reality TV) broadened my horizons and piqued my curiosity even further. I learned the basics: Six real housewives (not actresses) are featured in the series. Three had been fired after season 4 and three new ones plus the three regulars would be on Season 5. I found social media outlets quoting lots of fans who were speculating as to whether or not they liked Bravo’s changes. Several of them bickered back and forth about it, “I hate this one”; “They never should have fired that one” etc. (Bickering among the Housewives is basically what happens on every episode, too).

We found a gorgeous 6 bedroom luxurious villa where the ladies would stay, provided our concierge services from both our US and SBH offices and arranged for a private chef, a massage therapist, make-up artist, hairdresser, butler and of course stocked the wine cellar and liquor cabinet – all the while keeping the entire event strictly confidential…No leaks allowed. We are accustomed to keeping secrets because we often have celebrities staying in our properties and, out of our respect for everyone, SBP would never reveal who they are, so it was no big deal.

Off to St. Barts they went. We met The Housewives at the airport as is customary and escorted them to the extraordinary Villa Oasis de Salines where I was waiting to greet them. Yes! I will be on the show! I met all of the lovely ladies, showed them around the entire villa as they oohed and aahed and eventually each one chose their individual bedrooms. Magdalena Votava the Concierge at our St Barth office was with me so she could assist them with other requests. They loved the villa and of course, St. Barts! (Who wouldn’t?)

I kept bumping into The Housewives in various places, which is the norm for anyone who is out and about on this tiny 8 square mile island. In fact, by coincidence the St. Barth Dental Association meeting was taking place that same week. Both my husband Steve and my son, Mark Smyth (a dentist too) were taking the course. One evening The RHONY Housewives walked into the same restaurant where the dentists and their wives were dining. – Small world. The dentists were dazzled and some even got up to dance with them (I don’t know if that scene will be on the show or it ended up on the cutting room floor).

I started watching Season 5 on Mondays at 9:00 pm with hubby Steve and even he is amused by it. The RHONY series began June 04. Be sure to watch the show (and/or DVR it) on Bravo TV at 9:00 pm August 27, September 3 and September 10, 2012. I have no clue as to what they will be showing but I think you will love seeing all of the scenes as well as the scenery. Please let me know your thoughts about what you saw. It is all in fun and I hope you enjoy it even if you do not dare admit to your friends that you watched it. Who knows they might be RHONY fans too!

Mid January 2012 in St Barts

Friday, January 20th, 2012

The weather here in St. Barts is beautiful; it is about 80 degrees today and will be about 72 degrees tonight. The water temperature is in the high 70’s. We do get occasional showers and 5 minute downpours which helps keep the island so lush. The rainbows here are outstanding. Here is a picture of one that I took this morning.

Last week I went to check out the “new” Les Embruns, one of our most popular villas. In fact, the villa was so booked that this was my first chance to see it. Our photographer was taking new photos during a 4 day opening so it worked out perfectly. New decks have been added. One is open for sunning while the other one is covered and offers outdoor living. That deck is located across from the existing outdoor dining gazebo. Who wouldn’t like to spend the most time possible outside on gorgeous St Barth? During the day the sun is shining and the view is gorgeous. Return from dinner in the evening, relax in the new heated Jacuzzi and then enjoy a digestif while gazing up at the stars. For more information on Villa Les Embruns, please contact reservations@stbarth.com.

This week the annual meeting of the St. Barth Dental Association is taking place. My son Dr. Mark Smyth arrived here on Sunday to attend the meeting. For those of you who don’t already know, my husband Steve is a dentist so he is taking the course with Mark as is an orthodontist friend of ours Dr. Patrick Assioun. The lecture takes place each morning at the Capitainerie in Gustavia. When they take their breaks, they can go outside on the balcony and look at the mega yachts in the harbor. Their afternoons are free to enjoy St. Barts. What a nice way to get CEU’s! If you are a dentist and interested in attending the SBDA meeting in 2013, let me know and I will send you information once the speaker is announced.

Coincidentally, my other son and VP, Tom Smyth arrived here on Tuesday. Tom is the liaison for people who wish to buy property in St Barts through our company St. Barth Properties Sotheby’s International Realty. He is here to inspect new listings and we also are meeting with the on-island staff to go over business matters.

Steve and I are leaving warm and sunny St. Barts tomorrow and flying back to snowy and cold Boston because I want to go the Patriots AFC Championship game on Sunday. It is supposed to snow so I hope our flights won’t be canceled. My daughter gathered up all of my winter gear so that I can be warm during the game. I hope I won’t be disappointed in the outcome. The last time I flew back for a playoff game, the end result was not good, so I hope I don’t jinx the game. We are flying back to St Barth on Tuesday. By the time I write my next blog we will al know which teams are going to the Super Bowl.

Where in the world would a dentist want to be in January, 2012?

Friday, July 8th, 2011

When it is snowy up north what’s a dentist to do in order to escape from the cold and earn CEU’s at the same time? Come on down to St. Barts! The St. Barth Dental Association welcomes you.

Mark your calendars. The upcoming meeting will be held Monday, January 16, 2012 through Friday, January 20, 2012. The keynote speaker is Jack Hahn D.D.S. and the course being offered is INCORPORATING IMPLANT DENTISTRY INTO YOUR DAILY PRACTICE. The classes run from 8:30 am to 11:30 am each day and are held in the Capitainerie (Harbor Master’s building) which is located on the quai.

When you take your morning break, go out on the balcony and marvel at the amazing yachts that will be docked right in front of you. Other events such as a welcome reception, a cocktail hour with wine tasting and a farewell dinner are also included.

As many of you already know I am married to a dentist. My son, Mark Smyth is also a dentist and bought my husband’s dental practice a few years ago. Although Steve is retired, he keeps up with the latest in dentistry because he is now a consultant and expert witness on court cases involving dentistry. Dentists must take continuing education courses in order to renew their licenses.

Please join us for a very fun week of challenging education and relaxation. This annual meeting affords dentists and family members the opportunity to discover the uniqueness of St Barth with its beautiful beaches, outstanding restaurants, sidewalk cafés and designer boutiques.

Baby, it’s cold outside (and snowy)? Cheri, it’s warm in St. Barth (and sunny)

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Have you had enough of winter? Why not do what my son, Mark Smyth and his wife Cynthia did last week? They hired a babysitter and escaped from the frigid cold of Massachusetts.

As many of you already know I am married to a dentist. My son, Mark is also a dentist and bought my husband’s dental practice a few years ago. The St. Barth Dental Association held their annual meeting at the Capitainerie January 17-21, 2011, so Steve and Mark took the course and learned a lot. (I will have more details on the 2012 meeting in a future blog for any of you dentists who may be interested.) The course finished at 11:30 am each day, so there was plenty of time left to play and Thursday evening the SBDA hosted a cocktail party followed by dinner and a fashion show at La Plage.

Mark and Cynthia arrived via Tradewind Aviation from San Juan. The first order of business was to clear immigration by showing their passports to a friendly gendarme. Then on to the luggage carousel to retrieve their bags and head out the door, turn right and walk to the car rental area and check in at our booth.

It was great to have them here. They haven’t been to St Barth since their last child was born in 1990, so they really noticed the changes and loved the fact that the island remains as charming as ever.

February is fast approaching and the groundhog will soon be reminding you that there are still 6 more weeks of winter ahead of you. Do you need an incentive to come down here with your honey?

Surprise your significant other for Valentine’s Day! Book Villa Bamboo for any stay in February and a Suzuki Jimny car rental will be included in the rate! That is a savings of 450 euros per week! Just think of how many romantic dinners you can have with that extra 450 euros in your pocket. Villa Bamboo is lovely and private. Guests love to listen to the sounds of the sea as they sit on the pool deck and marvel at view and the ever-changing colors of the crystal clear water on Grand Cul de Sac Bay.
