Where can you watch the Super Bowl in St Barts?

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

If you read my last blog, you know that Steve and I went back to the New England winter for 3 days so that we could watch the AFC Championship football game. It was a real nail-biter and, for us, the outcome was just what the doctor ordered (except that Steve and I both picked up that nasty cold that is going around). The final score was the New England Patriots 23 – Baltimore Ravens 20. The score was only determined during the last few seconds of the game. In the other league, The New York Giants won the NFC Championship game. The final match between these two winners takes place at Super Bowl XLVI February 5, 2012.

Game-Over---Baby-It's-Cold-Outside

Game Over - Baby It's Cold Outside

Are you a Super Bowl fan? Are you going to Indianapolis to watch the Game? Are you having a Super Bowl party at home? Or are you one of the lucky ones who is vacationing here on St. Barts and enjoying the sunshine, beaches, restaurants and boutiques? You say “Yes, BUT I still want to be able to catch the Super Bowl game Sunday night.”

Have no fear Andy is here! Yes Andy is having his own tailgate party right here at the Hideaway Restaurant in St. Jean. His motto is, “Warm, Beer, Lousy Food and a View of the Car Park.” Of course that is tongue-in-cheek. The beer is ice cold; the food is great and, well, the car park view is kind of true but well-hidden so no one even notices. We all love Andy’s Hideaway. We dine there very often.

If you are a guest of St. Barth Properties and are already on the island, call our on-island concierge Magda Votava at 0590 29 75 05 or email magda@stbarth.com. If you will be arrivng this week, call our US concierge Julia Hurd at + 1-508-570 4129 or email juliahurd@stbarth.com. They will be happy to let Andy know that you are attending.

Enjoy!!

PS. I just received word that the Village St Jean hotel is hosting a Super Bowl party too. The lounge has a wide screen TV and is featuring a prix fixe menu at 35 euros per person.

Mid January 2012 in St Barts

Friday, January 20th, 2012

The weather here in St. Barts is beautiful; it is about 80 degrees today and will be about 72 degrees tonight. The water temperature is in the high 70’s. We do get occasional showers and 5 minute downpours which helps keep the island so lush. The rainbows here are outstanding. Here is a picture of one that I took this morning.

Last week I went to check out the “new” Les Embruns, one of our most popular villas. In fact, the villa was so booked that this was my first chance to see it. Our photographer was taking new photos during a 4 day opening so it worked out perfectly. New decks have been added. One is open for sunning while the other one is covered and offers outdoor living. That deck is located across from the existing outdoor dining gazebo. Who wouldn’t like to spend the most time possible outside on gorgeous St Barth? During the day the sun is shining and the view is gorgeous. Return from dinner in the evening, relax in the new heated Jacuzzi and then enjoy a digestif while gazing up at the stars. For more information on Villa Les Embruns, please contact reservations@stbarth.com.

This week the annual meeting of the St. Barth Dental Association is taking place. My son Dr. Mark Smyth arrived here on Sunday to attend the meeting. For those of you who don’t already know, my husband Steve is a dentist so he is taking the course with Mark as is an orthodontist friend of ours Dr. Patrick Assioun. The lecture takes place each morning at the Capitainerie in Gustavia. When they take their breaks, they can go outside on the balcony and look at the mega yachts in the harbor. Their afternoons are free to enjoy St. Barts. What a nice way to get CEU’s! If you are a dentist and interested in attending the SBDA meeting in 2013, let me know and I will send you information once the speaker is announced.

Coincidentally, my other son and VP, Tom Smyth arrived here on Tuesday. Tom is the liaison for people who wish to buy property in St Barts through our company St. Barth Properties Sotheby’s International Realty. He is here to inspect new listings and we also are meeting with the on-island staff to go over business matters.

Steve and I are leaving warm and sunny St. Barts tomorrow and flying back to snowy and cold Boston because I want to go the Patriots AFC Championship game on Sunday. It is supposed to snow so I hope our flights won’t be canceled. My daughter gathered up all of my winter gear so that I can be warm during the game. I hope I won’t be disappointed in the outcome. The last time I flew back for a playoff game, the end result was not good, so I hope I don’t jinx the game. We are flying back to St Barth on Tuesday. By the time I write my next blog we will al know which teams are going to the Super Bowl.

More Neat stuff about St. Barts

Do you remember one of my previous blog’s where I mentioned the very talented Tomas Doncker Band that was playing at the Baz Bar over the holiday period? Tomas kindly stopped my office in Gustavia to give me his latest CD, “Power of the Trinity”. It is excellent. I thanked him and told him that we would go to his last show on Sunday night before the band headed back to New York. We enjoyed it immensely. If you get a chance to see the band, you will not be disappointed. Check out their website www.tomasdonker.net.

I gave my grandson Vince a trip to St. Barth as a combination Christmas/ 21st birthday present and I invited his girlfriend Samantha (“Sam”) to join him before they return to the University of Miami where they are both top students (Yes, I am allowed to brag.) I used my frequent flyer miles to get them as far as St. Maarten and then secured the inter-island flights for them. They have been having a great time. We went to St. Jean Beach one afternoon. The next day they toured all the way around the island by Jet Ski and yesterday they hiked the goat path to Colombier Beach. (You must do that at least once or take a catamaran there. That is the only way to access this gorgeous beach and great snorkeling spot.)

Our evenings have been full, too. We went to some of my favorite restaurants. Tuesday evening we went to our St. Barth Properties cocktail party which we host every Tuesday evening (late November to the end of April). It takes place from 6:30 to 7:30 at the gorgeous Bonito restaurant which overlooks the harbor. We enjoyed talking to our villa and hotel clients and then stayed on for dinner. The food was excellent.

A week in St. Barth should include one night at Le Ti St. Barth. It describes itself as being “A Caribbean Tavern.” We went there for dinner and were entertained by a fashion show at 9:30 followed by a cabaret show. You should try it. Today we’ll hit the shops and tomorrow we’ll have a “cheeseburger in paradise” at Le Select.

Last night we went to the Santa Fe restaurant (delicious as always!) and as we were leaving, a gentleman introduced himself and his wife to me. He said, “Peg? I love your blog.” Well, that stopped me right there in my tracks, “You do????” He said, “Yes I wouldn’t miss it.” It was great to hear that. So, if any of you feel the same way, I certainly do not mind if you add a comment to let me know. You can also ask me questions about St. Barth and suggest topics you would like me to explore.

It turns out that this couple is a longtime repeat client of SBP. They have come to St. Barth and used our services every year since 2002. Happy 10th Bob and Susan!

They told me that they love working with Julie Nally who is one of our St Barth Specialists. Julie has been with SBP and assisting clients with their choice of villa or hotel since 1997. Her contact info is julienally@stbarth.com. This is the 5th time in a row that Bob and Sue stayed at Villa Sud Ouest which is a real testimony on how enjoyable it is. I hope to see them again at our cocktail party next Tuesday.

Countdown to New Year’s Eve in St. Barts 2011

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

The festivities continued throughout the week. Many shops hosted wonderful cocktail parties throughout Gustavia. After hosting our weekly cocktail party at Bonito restaurant on Tuesday, we continued on to a cocktail reception at the elegant jewelry store, Chopard because I had received a very nice invitation to attend. So many people were there – the Champagne was flowing and yummy hors d’oeuvres were being passed.

After that we strolled along the harbor and decided to stop in to say Bonsoir to Brice. He used to work at the Tom Beach hotel’s Pink Parrot Bar that is situated in the sand by its La Plage restaurant. Brice recently purchased La Cantina and I wanted to check it out. (That’s part of my job so I can update my “Helpful Hints” which many people refer to as their “bible”). La Cantina is very a popular spot with reasonably priced drinks and tapas. It has a view of the harbor and is a great place if you are into people-watching.

The next evening we were invited to attend the Grand Opening of Natalie Clifford’s new contemporary art gallery, Space SBH, which is located in the Carré D’Or shopping area. It was packed and once again the Champagne was flowing. Flute in hand, I walked around and marveled at featured artist Dominique Rousserie’s work.

Some of his work that is on display through January 14, 2012 features paintings of St Barth which would complement anyone’s décor. I particularly love the one that shows the map of St. Barth.

New Year's Eve 2011 cocktail reception at the Wall House

With New Year’s Eve fast approaching, the island continued to bulge as more people were arriving by plane, ferry or yacht. People just love to be in St. Barth at this time of year. Traditionally Steve and I always go to the Wall House for the evening. Julien Tatin and his father Bernard are such wonderful hosts. We gathered in front of the Wall House Museum for cocktail hour that featured an open bar and a wonderful array of passed hors d’oeuvres. Yachts were berthed in front of us; the atmosphere was perfect. A delicious dinner in the restaurant followed. Courses including foie gras, fish and veal were served. We finished just in time to see the midnight fireworks. Everyone began kissing each other and while shouting Bonne Année! The sky was full of bursts of color and the yachts sounded their horns in approval.
